Vitamin B6 – importance for the human body

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) makes a key contribution to metabolism of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. If there is a lack of vitamin B6, not enough protein will be available for cell reproduction. Blood cells and nerve cells also depend on this vitamin, and react sensitively to a deficiency. Examples of causes of a shortage include: Unbalanced diet, high alcohol consumption, and certain drugs, particularly the contraceptive pill in women. However, antihypertensive drugs and other medicines increase the need for vitamin B6. Deficiency warning signs include inflammatory skin changes in the nose, eye, and mouth area, nervousness, irritability, and nerve disorders such as a sense of numbness in the arms and legs.

Vitamin B6 Hevert is intended to prevent or overcome a deficiency if there is an increased need for vitamin B6 or a pyridoxine-dependent metabolic disorder. If enough vitamin B6 is available, the essential cell components are provided, metabolism is activated, energy stocks are replenished, and blood formation, the nervous system and the immune system are boosted. In this way, vitamin B6 promotes the healthy development and regeneration of the body. The high-dose vitamin preparation is intended to rectify disorders in the nervous system, thus normalizing communication between nerves, cells, tissues, and organs.

Through its involvement in protein metabolism, vitamin B6 controls the specialization and division of cells. Both the production of antibodies for an intact immune defense and the formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin are stimulated. In the nervous system, vitamin B6 improves signal transmission through chemical messengers. It helps to decrease high homocysteine levels, thus reducing a possible risk of vascular diseases.

The following symptoms may indicate vitamin B6 deficiency

General symptoms such as:

  • sleeplessness
  • nervous disorders
  • increased irritability
  • depressive states

Specific symptoms such as:

  • abnormal skin sensations (conversely, these can also be caused by too much vitamin B6!)
  • nerve inflammations
  • states of confusion
  • increase in homocysteine in the blood (thus increasing the risk of cardiac infarction and stroke)

Why do we need vitamin B6?

Vitamin B6 is mainly needed in protein metabolism. Key chemical messengers for the brain such as serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid are formed via this process.

Although vitamin B6 is found in most foods, it is present only in small quantities. Consequently, people on the popular high-protein, low-carb diet may develop vitamin B6 deficiency. The more protein we eat, the more vitamin B6 is needed to process it. This means that even those who eat foods rich in protein, including protein shakes, have an increased need for vitamin B6.
